Wall Art | Calgary Family Photographer04.13.11

Well, I am glad that I did not commit to a weekly wall art series:)  I have actually had this post prepped for awhile and just needed to take the shots.  You would think that would be simple here:)

This is a collage of Gallery Wrapped Canvases that I have displayed in the studio.  This has been a very popular way for clients to display art and tell a story from their session.  I love canvas for the simplicity and clean lines.  However, I do like that canvas offers the option to hang pieces very linear or more with more of an eclectic collage look.  I have recently done a similar collage for a client but with a more eclectic format as their home is not as contemporary as the studio is.

I am so excited to share a few of the pictures from this session that I recently did for one of my long-term clients. The session was done for a couple of purposes – first as a surprise for dad’s birthday (so if you know him…please keep the secret) and secondly to provide an image that will be used as wall paper in this family’s home! This client has one of the most beautifully decorated homes (in my opinion) that I have ever seen. It is modern, artistic and still minimalistic. They have made some gorgeous art pieces from their girls’ pictures. Anyway, I was very excited to again get to work with this family to capture and showcase memories with them.

This session was also very exciting as we got to capture images of a HUGE activity for this family. Dance! I LOVE dance pictures. The slightest movement or look can bring so much emotion and grace. It was such a treat to watch each of the girls dance.

Enjoy your sneak peek and I will have the rest up asap.

I will be in Vegas for WPPI (a photography convention/tradeshow) from the 19th through the 23rd. I have registered for a bunch of great speakers and look forward to bringing back a wealth of knowledge and ideas. I am also looking forward to meeting photographers that I “social(media)ize” with face to face;)

Another instalment of wall art.  I am not certain how this will translate.  It is a framing project that I was recently working on for a client.  We are beginning a family wall that we can expand upon.  We are using simple black wood frames with a classic black core white mat.  This client did not want their images used on my blog or website so I cannot show how well everything flowed together.  I think that the framing idea still comes across…I hope.  The print sizes used here were 3- 8×10, 1 – 10×10, 1 – 10×13 and 1-11×14.

I think that a lot of times clients get overwhelmed with having to complete a wall.  I do not think that this should always be the case.  Particularly as you are trying to tell a story over time and be able to use the images from annual photo sessions.  Many of my clients decorate with clean lines and so one thing that we begin with when starting a wall collage is to have a straight and even spaced mid-line.  This allows different sizes to be added but still maintains a visual anchor.

As promised here is a second idea for wall art. This is a collage of gallery wrapped canvas pieces taken from a session done in the fall. The client loved the peaceful images that we got of her son and wanted to use them together. This is what we ended up putting together for her. This sample was put together so that she could visualize ideas to scale based on the space available as well as their wall colour. The sizing on these three pieces was 16×26, 10×10 and 10×14.

I have mentioned (perhaps even promised) that I would show you some of the art pieces that I have brought into the studio or worked on for clients. The last couple of years have brought a lot of clients looking to use the images that we produce to decorate their homes as well as looking for different design ideas. I have decided that I would start this year off by sharing so of the ideas and projects that I have had the pleasure of working on. I am planning on having a wall art post each week (and if I say it here, I am more likely to follow through:).

Here is the first piece that I am showcasing. This is 20×40 wrapped metal that I have in the studio. Now, I will add…this is not for everyone but it is one of my favourites. My design style is very contemporary and minimalist and this piece is very much my style.

As I continue to update my website, I will incorporate these ideas there so that you can find them easily. I would love your opinions on this, feedback, ideas that you would like to see,…
