Wall art | Calgary/California Family Photographer03.13.13

I have received a lot of the art back for my own house and am slowly getting things on the wall.  I get a lot of questions about whether or not you can put canvas and frames together.  Yes, you can but I do not recommend putting them on the same wall.  Here is what I have done in my dining nook with a combination of both.

The main floor is very open and needed some colour so I picked very vibrant images from last year.  With these being in frames it makes it easy to be able to switch them out each year.  I chose favourites from last year but can make a switch this year with new ones as the kids grow.  Alternatively, canvas needs to be an image that you want for awhile.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have also been meeting with framers in California to ensure that I am offering the best in custom framing to my clients.  I work with an amazing framer in Calgary and have so for 8 years and so there were some very big shoes to fill in California.  I am happy to say I found a great vendor and so far am extremely impressed with his work.  Custom framing allows you to get exactly the configuration and sizing that you want (as you can see I use a combination of rectangular and square images).  I also chose a simple frame and mat to match my furniture (straight lines and minimalist).

I always use anti-glare glass as a standard when framing for clients.  It makes a huge difference in that you can see your art from anywhere in the house as opposed to glare.  The picture below depicts this well.  As an added benefit the glass is also UV protected to keep the prints from fading.

I am back in Calgary this weekend with a full weekend of shoots and continue working on art projects.  I will have more from those soon.  I will also have a note posted on the spring dates/times that I have remaining.

As I mentioned a few posts ago,  I have been working on a fair amount of wall art for clients over the last couple of months.  Things are finally going up and I am trying to make sure I get pictures (even if they are iPhone pictures like this one:).  These are 16×24 gallery wrap canvas.  Canvas is very popular due to the nice clean lines, the fact that you do not need further framing and it is actually quite resilient (when purchased from reputable vendors).  Children love to look at themselves and sometimes touch the pictures, canvas does allow for little fingers to touch and it can be gently wiped down with a very damp cloth.  More to come soon!

With the fall and Christmas season being so busy for everyone, clients and I collectively push working on wall art to the new year.  I have a number of meetings scheduled over the next couple of weeks to work on a bunch of projects.  I have also been working on a few of my own walls to make my house feel like a home as well as I test new vendors and try new products.  I am always looking for something new:).  I thought that I would share images of my walls as well as clients to help give you ideas of what you can do with your images.

The following is a canvas (a product I use a lot).  This one is a 40×60 of one of my favourite images from 2012.  It was our first trip to the beach in California, I ADORE the water and the beach in particular, the grandness of the pier and littleness of my daughter, the freeness of her flying around the beach (both children loved that day:), the simplicity of the image,…  Looking at this from my kitchen makes me happy!  I had seen an oversized canvas of a surfer in a James Perse store and loved it and knew that was what I wanted (with my own spin).  I am a minimalist and typically decorate my home with large and few pieces – I like the style of an art gallery…simple and easy to clean:).

I felt a little bad putting such a big piece of one of my children but I do have a plan to even it out.  My son’s shot has not happened yet but my vision for it involves the water (which is too cold to get in right now) and will bring some colour to the wall and a new medium.  Can’t wait!  I also have some framed prints going in this week (this grouping will be different from my normal style so we will see how it goes).  I will post as soon as I get them back and hung.  I am also hoping to get a few up around my desk.  The blank wall is screaming for some attention…and it will make it much more pleasant to work in this space.  More soon!

I have been working on a bunch of wall art projects for clients and I LOVE to see the finish product hanging.  I was so thrilled to get pictures back from this client of their art.  Love it!!  We did a canvas collage as well as a series of metal pieces.  I got these pictures from them forever ago and am just now getting around to sharing.  I have a bunch more projects coming up over the next little while and will try to be more timely on sharing.  I am also working on getting walls completed in my own house.  Will share those too.

Closing of another baby year | Calgary Baby Photographer04.17.11

I can’t believe that we have come to the end of another Watch Me Grow year with this family.  However we are already planning our next session (an outdoor session when the weather FINALLY cooperates)!  I had to get this quick post up to share with this family.  There are more coming shortly but this totally sums up how much fun we have had over the last few years.  One of these images will be made into a piece of art for their home that accompanies the words “Remember, as far as everyone knows we’re just a nice normal family.”  LOVE IT!!  I need this for my house!  N and K, I can’t tell you how great it has been to work with your family over the last couple of years!  More soon!
