Overcommitted | Calgary Family Photographer05.03.13

I have always been really great at overcommitting myself.  I have also been really great at keeping up with my overcommitments:).  This year I have found my limit though.  Not sure what it is that has helped me to realize it  – age, priority realization, maturity (haha, probably not), friends, yoga, kids melting down:(…  Probably a combination of all of them.  I have been trying to get involved in a bunch of different activities to try to find a place in my new community and to try to find my way of giving back (cuz I always have…and always will).  Over the last few weeks though, I have noticed a direct effect of my overcommitment on my own personal community (my family) and my business (have not even got my fall times up for you yet).  I have not been able to spend as much time working on the three things that mean the most to me – family, health and photography.  So I have taken myself off some extra-curricular activities to get back to focussing on what I love.  Sadly one of them is a charity that I was excited about in Redlands and the other is the CIBC Run for the Cure.  I have other ways that I will be giving back to both of these charities but will be taking a step back for this year.  I will have more on the CIBC Run for the Cure over the next little while as so many of you have been so incredibly supportive over the last 5 years.

And well a picture, because I am so grateful that I get to capture little moments like this:).

Personal pictures02.12.13

The beginning of each year always brings a bunch of clean up, reflection, changes for the new year,….  Although, I don’t know that there was as much of that early last year as I was just trying to get my bearings in a new country.  So this year as I was going through hard drive clean up, I have found pictures from my brother’s wedding that I did not even process.  It was October…the middle of busy season and a couple of months from moving countries.  So they have sat there for over a year and a half…fortunately I was not shooting their wedding just my children as the ring bearer and flower girl.  I did not even pull my camera out much as sometimes there are times to just enjoy.  Here are the few that I did get that evening though.  I really like them as they capture for me parts of the day:)

Assignment – January | Calgary Family Photographer02.05.13

I have decided to put myself on assignment. And well, I tried it for a year, so I know I can do it:) 2012 gave me the time to focus back on my family more and to capture them even more than normal. And I did. I also tried to look at everything from a different perspective. I will be doing this even more this year. I will be shooting more and will then share favourites at the end of the month. I will be testing myself to look at life from different perspectives and will also be telling our story as I go. Many of these images will then be what I use to put together my year end book…and I won’t have to spend as much time as I did this past year going through the reams of images:).

Here is a bit of January:

Blurb | Calgary Family Photographer01.10.13

For the past couple of years I have been putting together books as gifts for family.  I thought that I would share this past year’s book for my mother in law as I think that it is a great DIY product and find Blurb’s book application to be easy to use.

I am, personally, not very good at printing individual pictures for family as I shoot a bit too much:)  And for myself, I tend to print art so that my family can constantly enjoy the pictures (the kids love looking at themselves:).  However, my MIL does not want that though as she shares time between the US and Canada and wants something she can carry in her purse.   So I find this to be an awesome way for her to show off part of her family and to document the year for her.

I print a few copies of the book so that my children can look through them as well.  However, I will be putting together my own year in review book over the next month that has a few more of the shots that resinate with me (and in a larger size book – this one is a 7×7).  I will try to remember to share that when it is complete to give you ideas for your own pictures.

I am also in the process of testing a couple of companies for higher end books to offer this service to my clients.  I will have samples of each of these in the studio soon.

Here are a few of the pages for the book I created.
