Reminder09.23.13

I have been trying to decide if I would share this or not.  I am fairly private when it comes to my personal life but since this is a cause that I am so directly involved with that I feel that it is important as a reminder.  I recently had to have a biopsy on my breast following a suspect area on my mammogram.  Fortunately all turned out just fine!  Yeah!!

Obviously this process was a bit scary as my mum passed away from the disease 6.5 years ago and so emotion came with that fear and my children did see me upset a couple of times over the last few weeks.  Being the realist I am, I was upfront with them about what was going on.  The day after the biopsy I was sore and moving a little slower than normal, which is definitely not a side of me that my children usually witness:).  My son showed up after school with a half- eaten doughnut that he had saved from a classmate’s birthday celebration.  He had mentioned to his classmates that his mom had to have a portion of her breast taken off and this was to help her feel better.  So since the fourth grade class knows, I might was well share here too.  We will definitely have to work on what is shareable info at school.:). But so sweet and compassionate, that I couldn’t help but smile.  My daughter did have to chime in during all of this, “mom doesn’t eat doughnuts”…and I don’t typically but I did that day:)
Early detection is important so please make sure you take time out of your schedules to remember to have yourself checked.  I am thankful that I am not having to continue through anymore of the process and can focus completely on fall shoots!  Will be sharing lots soon – beyond this iPhone picture:).

my book09.10.13

So I had mentioned earlier in the year that I would be putting together a coffee table book for myself of my favourite images from last year.  Well I did…back in June and I have not shared it.  I thought that I would share mine to get you thinking about what to do with your pictures.  I do this for my in-laws each year but had not done one for myself until this year.  I will be going back to tell the story of each year for myself (after busy season now:).  I am so glad I finally did this.  Narrowing down was definitely most difficult part (thankfully my images are very organized:).  This year I am trying to be a bit more forward thinking and putting the favourites from the month in a favourites folder that I will be able to use at the end of the year for both my book and my in-laws (and, yes, I am already behind a few months:).

The company that I used for these was Blurb as their book making software is super simple.  This year I used their templates but next year will do my own so that composition and page spacing is optimized (this is not necessary…I am just picky).  I did upgrade the paper as well so that it can withstand a lot of viewing.  You can easily add text if you like.  I printed 2 copies when I completed so that each of my children have one later…I expect that one will be more tattered than the other but we will just call it loved:).

The reason | Calgary Family Photographer08.21.13

I mentioned yesterday the reason that we could not swim with the sharks yet and then came across this image which depicts exactly the reason why.  This child spends more time below the surface than above the surface of the water…not helpful with a snorkel.  May have to get her into Synchro classes…or scuba:)

San Diego | Calgary Family Photographer08.20.13

We tossed around a lot of ideas for vacation this year…road trip around California, back to Canada, something more adventurous,… but what we realized was that we needed to all be in the same place together and not traveling.  Both of us spend a fair amount of time on the road now and so it was so nice to relax in one place for a week together.  We all love San Diego for all that it offers…cooler weather but still sunny, surf, beach, aquariums, food, and the boardwalk making everything easily accessible…and it is only 2 hours from Redlands.

We had made an activity list before we left which became the “play hard” list as there were a lot of activities that we wanted to jam in…we are not very good at relaxing:).  Things on the list were surfing, paddle boarding, scooter/long boarding, running on the boardwalk, going to the birch aquarium, sea world, zoo, safari park,…  We did almost everything on our list.  One thing that will have to carry over to a future list after the little one improves her snorkel skills is swimming with the leopard sharks at la jolla.

We even finally had family pictures done – YEAH!!   And good thing as I did not seem to take as many pictures and there still isn’t any of me doing anything:).  Here are a few of what I did take though.  Hope everyone has been having or has had a fantastic summer!!

Supporting the CIBC Run for the Cure | Calgary Photography07.18.13

As I mentioned a few months ago, I will not be setting up a Tot Shots team for the CIBC Run for the Cure in Calgary this year:(.  I could not be away for 3 weekends in a row from my children so the timing was not going to work this year.  It is more difficult to run a team (and do the best job possible) from afar so it is one of the things that I had to let go of this year.  It does not mean though that I will not be running that day cuz I definitely will be!!  Also, I will be supporting in other ways that I can.  I told Steph, the survivor on our team, that I would do marketing pictures for whatever team she decided to start or be a part of.  She decided to join forces with a few of her good friends, fellow survivors and support system to form the team “Breast Friends Forever”.  The inspiration of strength, courage and friendship that I witnessed from this shoot and working with these girls together was fantastic.  They are truly amazing and are going on to share their stories in a number of different ways to inspire women.  Steph, Jenn and Heather, thank you for letting me capture some of the images of support and strength for you.  Jenn has written some of each of their stories on the the CIBC website here.

If you have allocated money to support me this year, I would love if you would support them instead.  Thank you to everyone that has supported me in the past.
