Watch Me Grow – 6 months |Calgary Baby Photographer

You have seen this client many times (I think that we determined that this is the 9th session in 4 years) and this time we were shooting the little ones 6 month pictures. We got a bunch of family pictures and then broke down to get the baby roll pictures, the sitting up, grabbing of toes and, of course, the drool:) And we cannot forget big sister who is an absolute joy to work with. I love how she is trying to escape from dad’s lips this time;) Also love the look on her face as she was trying to save her hair from the grasp of her little sister.

I am so excited to share a few of the pictures from this session that I recently did for one of my long-term clients. The session was done for a couple of purposes – first as a surprise for dad’s birthday (so if you know him…please keep the secret) and secondly to provide an image that will be used as wall paper in this family’s home! This client has one of the most beautifully decorated homes (in my opinion) that I have ever seen. It is modern, artistic and still minimalistic. They have made some gorgeous art pieces from their girls’ pictures. Anyway, I was very excited to again get to work with this family to capture and showcase memories with them.

This session was also very exciting as we got to capture images of a HUGE activity for this family. Dance! I LOVE dance pictures. The slightest movement or look can bring so much emotion and grace. It was such a treat to watch each of the girls dance.

I will be in Vegas for WPPI (a photography convention/tradeshow) from the 19th through the 23rd. I have registered for a bunch of great speakers and look forward to bringing back a wealth of knowledge and ideas. I am also looking forward to meeting photographers that I “social(media)ize” with face to face;)

You have seen this family many times on the blog. We have done studio sessions in the past but decided to get outside and enjoy the leaves this year. I am so glad that we did because seriously, I do not recall a year with this many leaves…and they were raked up just a few days after this. This family has energy…no doubt as this is the former owner of Fitmom in Calgary. Thank goodness I have been doing a fair amount of running myself to keep up with them;) The action shots are awesome but my FAVOURITE from this session is the one of mom and son in the leaves. I have been lucky enough to get to know this family over the last 6 years and I know it will be a favourite of mom’s too. More soon.

I got the opportunity to meet this little guy and his mom and dad last week for his 6 month photo shoot. I was hoping to have a few pictures up for this dad’s first Father’s Day but it did not happen. So Happy Belated Father’s Day. The little guy is at a super fun age…sitting up, interactive and still had lots of rolls! So cute!

of the gorgeous weather we had this past weekend in Calgary. It was beautiful and it was so nice to be out. This is a client that you have seen a few times. We did a couple of shots in the studio but then decided to move outside this time. I am so glad that we did as this family has awesome energy and amazing love for each other – it was a great way to capture it. It was amazing how much the little one, in particular, had changed – the gorgeous blond curls! Mom even mentioned to me on the way back to the studio that she wished she had done a shoot in between this one and the last – life does get busy, doesn’t it? R and S it was so fun to get outside and play…and to take advantage of the gorgeous green grass that I knew was coming;)

Part 2 |Calgary Maternity Photographer

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I would have a second post with the natural light shots. This helps to show the difference. Now you are going to ask, which do I prefer? I love both and both are very different. I love the simplicity that studio lighting shots offer – I like that they are clean and simple. I like that studio lighting stops the action of little ones. I was always a lover of fashion photography – growing up I had magazine ads posted all over my walls. There is something about a crisp clean catch light that gets me;)

However in the natural light shots, you will get a narrow depth of field (because I tend to shoot wide open – with a small f-stop for those that came last week) thus allowing you to tell a story about what you are focusing on, you can get some awesome shadows that again allow you to focus on the portion of the picture that is lit and you can also show some motion (when appropriate).

Time permitting, I will typically do a combination of both in a session.

Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation | Calgary Photographer

I had the awesome experience of doing a shoot back in February for the Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation (BCSC). The funny thing about this opportunity was that it came the week of the anniversary of my mum passing. I was so honoured to be asked to provide pictures for their marketing communications. The shoot was done with women and families that were fighting and surviving breast cancer. It was an amazing experience for me to work with such women of strength and seeing the support of their loved ones. Due to the sensitivity of the work I will not be sharing any of the pictures here. I still wanted to bring recognition to this foundation though as I was so impressed with everyone that I met through this experience. The staff at BCSC, the survivors and the board. The genuine care, support, gratitude was overwhelming.

The support that this foundation offers is so important. It was absolutely apparent how this group had helped each other through difficult times with an understanding that is not completely understood by families/friends. Part of the reason for my support of this foundation is that I have always felt like I was not able to really support my mum very well. My mum was incredibly strong and extremely private and the last thing that she ever wanted to do was to have her children “mother” her. Fortunately my mum had an amazing support system in the nursing/teaching community in which she worked (as well as her family, of course) but I am sure that a community of women who had gone through similar experiences would have been very valuable to her.

Thank you BCSC for giving me to the opportunity to work with you. Thank you to the ladies that participated…your strength was unbelieveably inspiring.
