Okay, I had promised more client work but I have had a lot of people ask how things are going. So I have decided to post an update here first. I have set up a new blog to document our adventure in Southern California. The blog serves a few purposes for me…update friends and family that have been so kind with their notes and thoughts, a photojournal of our adventure (which will later be made into a coffee table book) and it will also serve as a creative outlet for me. I have had ideas, personal projects and goals that I have not made enough time for over the last couple of years. This year brings the opportunity for inspiration through more time with my children, the adventure of a new country, and experimentation/growth in my photography.

The new blog is located at http://jodyboryski.tumblr.com. I am not committing to a daily blog but do hope to have it updated a few times a week. I will not be adding a lot of text to it as I am hoping that it speaks for itself and the images will tell the story for us for years to come.

The first thing that I purchased (with free shipping and duty free – woohoo!) was a camera purse. I wanted to make sure that I had my camera with me as much as possible. A few pictures have been taken on my iphone but the majority will be with my DSLR. There will be minimal editing (as that is typically where I get stuck in the process of getting pictures of my children) – I take lots but don’t find the time to go through them. These will be mostly right out of the camera.

I purposely did not come back in January (other than to get the dog who was not allowed to fly over Christmas) or begin my U.S. business so that I could focus on helping my children get settled in a new country, new school and new family logistics. It was a chaotic month but we are getting settled and in a routine now. As we get settled we can now begin to enjoy the benefits of small town Southern California – definitely a different pace for this family:). We are in Redlands, Ca – with a population of about 70,000 and orange groves and desert hills everywhere you look:) We are renting a house at the edge of town – the other side of the street is desert hills. This brings some creepy critters – last week was a dead tarantula… and snake season begins in May…should be fun for my son:) With the summer temperatures being 40+ degrees, we were very interested in a rental with a pool. I was super excited when we found one (as I grew up swimming and teaching it). However, I have since found out out how cold the pool is right now and how expensive it is to heat. I have now solved this issue by purchasing a triathlon wetsuit – I am getting in that water! I am certain that the neighbours will soon be calling me the “Crazy Canadian”:) I am hoping to do a triathlon but have not got into road biking yet…going to conquer running these hills and getting back in the water first:)

California is definitely appealing to my love of fresh, healthy and locally grown produce. I do have to say that I was somewhat surprised to find that a few things that I have taken for granted at home are a little more of a challenge to find here (i.e. I have gotten a few looks when asking about spelt flour). I have now found my favourite things though, just not all in one location. We have amazing resources in Calgary for healthy eating.

I am back in Calgary this week completely booked and SOOOO excited to get back to my business. More this week from the end of 2011!

I thought that I better follow up the last post with more of this gorgeous family and the toddler a little less blurry:) They have already seen a sneak peek of their images and the mom’s feedback was – “You have caught the essence of our family.” This is the best compliment that I could receive as this is exactly what I have set out to do:)

I can’t believe that this little one is already 9 months…and there is only one more Watch Me Grow session with them:( This is the first time that we have done outdoor shots with this family and the night could not have been a nicer one. LOVE the moments we captured!

I am embarrassed to say that I shot this session at the end of July…and I have had the images prepared for a post for a few weeks…the mom and I have even had our order meeting. But I wanted to share them. There are quite a few sessions that have not made it here and I am not sure if they will…I apologize in advance to those clients. I do try to share as many as I can but blogging went by the wayside through August. I had to take that additional blogging time (which seems to take me a significant amount of time:) and put it into my children. We had such a fun summer and hope that everyone else did as well. I can’t even believe that it is September already. My son off to Grade 2 and the little one is heading to Kindergarten. Holy smokes! As I said to my son on the way to school yesterday, “I just want you to stay little”. Of course in so many ways this is true and in many others it is not. I was so proud to see him happy, comfortable and confident as he was reunited with his buddies. I hope everyone else children are enjoying the beginning of their new year (and that the moms are hanging in there:). I am pretty sure that the next couple of weeks will be a lot more emotional as my daughter heads off to school (however, not on her part because she can’t wait). There will hopefully be some pictures shared here:)

Little Miss Mar is already 6 months! And isn’t she gorgeous. The whole family is gorgeous so she certainly comes by it honestly:) This little one was cutting some teeth at our session at the beginning of August and was VERY upset. We got a few that day especially with the older children but then I had them come back to get a few more of the little one to show some of the milestones and show how smiley she is:)

I have returned from my very quick trip to Victoria to see my grandparents and celebrate my grandmother’s 90th birthday with her. It was a wonderful trip. Not only did I love seeing them but I also fully enjoyed Victoria. How can you not love a place that is surrounded by water and blackberries grow like weeds!

I am now back into the swing of things. As promised, here are some images from a session that I had last week. We decided to switch up the session for this 4 month shoot (second of a Watch Me Grow package) and do the session at the family’s home to get the most of the session between the nap schedules. I love the images – they are very relaxed and their home has beautiful light:). Their 2 year old felt very comfortable right away (crawling into my lap to read a book within minutes of my arrival:) which allowed me to get some really fun ones of her too.

One of my clients contacted me in the spring to see if I would do an extended family session for her family to celebrate her parent’s 45th wedding anniversary…needless to say I was honoured! During the consult it was pretty clear that we were going to have a great shoot – discussing dogs (and how our dog and their past dog may be related) over coffee one morning. The shoot was great although I very quickly realized that I need to touch up on my jokes. One of the little boys asked me to tell them a joke so they would laugh. In my attempt of a joke, I ran two together (the only two I know:)) resulting in blank stares…oops! So I turned over the joke telling to him. B family it was great to work with you!

I am super excited to announce that I have added another photographer to Tot Shots – Jess Bobyn! Some of you will have met Jess and others will have heard of her working behind the scenes with me for the last couple of years. Jess comes with a photography degree from ACAD and a load of experience with children and families. I am so excited to have Jess on board. Not only is she one of the sweetest people that I have met but she is a ton of fun and it shines through in her work. I have provided a couple of samples of her work here and the rest of her portfolio has been added on the main website. I know that she will be an awesome addition to Tot Shots!

So, what does this mean…well, you will have the choice of two photographers. Due to the increase in demand (as my clients continue to refer Tot Shots – thank you very much!) and with the increased amount of wall art I have been working on, I am having to limit the number of sessions that I take in each month – I am currently booking two months in advance. If I am booked and you like Jess’s portfolio, you will have the opportunity to book with Jess or wait to get in with me. There will still be flexibility in scheduling due to newborns and rescheduling but I do encourage you to contact the studio if there is a specific date/month that you know that you would like. Jess has become very familiar with the Tot Shots processes over the last couple of years and will continue to offer the exceptional service that Tot Shots clients are accustom to. Welcome Jess!
